Point of attack No.2. Then the Devil took him to Jerusalem and set Him on the pinnacle of the temple. The point of attack, “If you are the Son (just like on the cross), throw yourself down. For it is written (Satan used Scriptures too), ‘He shall give His angels charge over you and in their hands they shall bear you up, lest you dash your foot against a stone.’”
In our daily language, Satan was saying like this: “if you are quoting Scriptures against me, let us see if your Father’s word cannot be broken. All you have to do is jump and if the word of God is really true, his angels will save you. You have nothing to worry about.”
Jesus Counter Attack. Again Jesus used the Scriptures, “You shall not tempt the Lord your God.’ (Quoted in Deut. 6:16). Jesus did not agree with Satan’s suggestion that He should jump off the Temple. If He did He was testing the Father. But He did not have to do that. He knew that the angels had charge over Him. He did not need to see physical evidence to believe the Word of God. Faith to the Word of God is essential in facing temptation.
Point of Attack No 3. Satan took up Jesus to a high mountain and showed Him all the kingdoms of this world and then said: “All these things I will give you if you will fall down and worship me.”
The Devil also offered Jesus the attraction of political power and glory the world can offer. “All you have to do is bow down and worship me. That is not too big to ask. No one will see us (no CCTV, Paparazzi) here, only the two of us here in the wilderness; just do it once in your life. If you do that you will inherit a world without suffering, without humiliation, without pain, without crucifixion.” (Paraphrase, mine)
Jesus Counter Attack. I guess by this time Jesus had enough and said Matt. 4:10 “Away with you, Satan! For it is written You shall worship the Lord your God, and Him only you shall serve.” (quoted Deut.6:13). These three temptation were all about the lust of the flesh, the lust of the eyes, and the pride of life. On the cross Jesus destroyed the power of sin.
Three times the arrows were shot at Jesus. Three times the assault came, testing the trust worthiness of the Word of God. Jesus refused to yield to temptation. He used the Word of God as His weapon. Jesus drove away Satan from the wilderness.
In times of temptations and testing's in our lives use the Word of God. It is good to know where they are in the Bible, if possible memorise them. So that you have the “gospel gun” ready to shoot the Devil in times of spiritual warfare. Trust the word of God, Jesus did it. The Psalmist says, “Your word I have hidden in my heart that I might not sin against you.” (Psalm 119:11). Obey His Word, because His grace is sufficient for you.
